Roman Polanski sex case arrest provokes backlash in Hollywood

US women have attacked film world's backing for director who again faces threat of trial for unlawful sex with 13-year-old girl in 1977

Hollywood stars flock to causes. An A-list name can boost the profile of a charity, highlight a far-off tragedy or reverse a grave injustice. So when Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on the way to a film festival, it is perhaps no wonder that the great and the good of the film world rushed to plead for his freedom.

The list of supporters giving Polanski their impassioned support read like a Who's Who of the cream of the movie-making world. It included, among many others, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Harvey Weinstein, Pedro Almodóvar and Ethan Coen.

But rather than rallying mass public support for the beleaguered film-maker – director of such undoubted classics as Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby and The Pianist – they have provoked an extraordinary backlash.

Led by a handful of outspoken female voices, a rising tide of opinion has instead applauded Polanski's arrest for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old back in 1977. They have turned the focus on the crime itself, calling the director an accused rapist who abused a child.

That, they say, should be the focus of the story and of Hollywood's ire, not defending an old man who pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a young girl then went on the run for 32 years to avoid prison. The backlash – not only against Polanski, but also against the Hollywood clan that rallied round him – has begun in earnest.

"Roman Polanski raped a child. Let's just start right there, because that's the detail that tends to get neglected," wrote feminist and author Kate Harding in an impassioned column in Salon. That article then went viral across the internet, gaining tens of thousands of page views and seeming to herald the reaction to come.

Harding, a liberal feminist, found herself being asked to appear on rightwing talk radio shows. Soon editorial after editorial, from the mighty New York Times to the smalltown Lowell Sun in Massachusetts, followed suit, welcoming Polanski's arrest as a case of long overdue justice for a serious crime.

It seems that the consequences of the dramatic development could now spread wider than just Polanski. Already some early supporters of the director, such as actress Whoopee Goldberg, have had to backtrack and clarify their positions. More are likely to follow suit in the weeks to come. Could it be that Hollywood – whose very existence rests on accurately predicting the public's taste – has made one of its gravest misjudgments? "The disconnect between Hollywood and the rest of the country seems enormous," said Anthony Mora, an author and founder of a leading Los Angeles-based public relations firm.

There is little doubt that the case is extremely complex. In many ways both sides are dealing in black and whites and not the shades of grey that too often more accurately describe reality.

For Polanski's defenders, that has meant ignoring the act that took place in 1977 and instead focusing on judicial wrongdoings that have plagued the case and Polanski's own tragedy-tinged life.

They point out that the director pleaded guilty only as part of a deal, which he then feared was being reneged upon. That is why he fled, they say. They also refer to his past – as a Holocaust survivor and a man whose wife, Sharon Tate, was brutally murdered by followers of Charles Manson – as evidence that he has already borne much suffering in his life.

Finally, his sterling record as a film director is held up as evidence of why he should be celebrated as a leading artist, not arrested for a crime where even the victim has asked for him not to be pursued after such a long time. Perhaps it is no wonder that many in Hollywood have described his plight in terms that make Polanski himself the martyr. Weinstein said the arrest was a "terrible situation". Actress Debra Winger said the Swiss had been involved in "Philistine collusion" in allowing the arrest. Goldberg, in now notorious remarks, said: "I don't believe it was 'rape-rape'."

But, as the outrage has grown, especially in the wake of Goldberg's remarks, the sheer scale of Hollywood's misjudgment in rallying so enthusiastically to Polanski's cause has begun to be exposed. One of Goldberg's fellow presenters on the ABC TV show The View, Sherri Shepherd, condemned Polanksi outright. Details of the victim's testimony in 1977 have been published and widely circulated through the media and via the gossip website The Smoking Gun. It makes for grim and unpleasant reading.

The girl graphically described being given champagne and a quaalude, a popular recreational drug in the 1970s, by Polanski before he had sex with her. She testified that she repeatedly said no but that he did not stop, committing numerous sexual acts as she protested.

Not surprisingly, it is feminists and women who have led the charge against Hollywood's support of Polanski. The Feminist Majority Foundation is in favour of his extradition. Katie Buckland, chief executive of the California Women's Law Centre, has pointed out the difference between Hollywood's attitudes towards Polanski's long-ago crime and the unearthed pasts of elderly paedophile Catholic priests.

Writer Vicki Iovine has also been outspoken, making the same point. Even some women members of Hollywood have broken ranks as actress Kirstie Alley loudly condemned Polanski and those who defended him. Nearly all have accused him in no uncertain terms of being a child rapist.

The ramifications of that will be difficult to measure. Polanski now faces a long legal battle that will span two continents. But in the arena of public opinion his image has been shattered. The words many people will now first associate with Polanski will be all to do with the sexual assault of a young child, not his film work. Even if he goes free, Polanski could now be hurt where it really matters to Hollywood: the box office. "Sex with children was, and always has been, anathema to Americans... the 'anything goes' cultural excesses of the time do not excuse Polanski from society's expectation that adults should protect kids, not exploit them," said author and sociologist BJ Gallagher.

The Polanski backlash has spread far and wide. He was never popular at all on the right wing of America's culture, but now middle America is firmly in favour of seeing him in a Californian courtroom. Talkshow hosts, radio commentators and newspaper editorials from coast to coast have all insisted that the arrest was long overdue and that Polanski needs to be brought to the US.

"Hollywood people really don't see the world in the same way as average people... that is why there is a backlash," said Mike Levine, a Hollywood PR expert.

But it is perhaps no surprise that the gap between Hollywood and the rest of America has grown so large on this particular case. Because of his long and illustrious career, Polanski is a friend and colleague of nearly all the main players in the film world. They are his confidantes and his peers. His movies have made them stars and helped them to earn millions. They live in the same rarefied world of global fame. "Elite Hollywood culture is protecting one of its own," said Alexander Riley, a professor of sociology at Bucknell University.

It is also speaks to a certain type of Hollywood culture which appears to insist that its top stars are in some ways elevated above the law and should be treated differently to ordinary members of the public.

If Polanski was just an ordinary man instead of a world-famous film director, the bare facts of his case would be likely to elicit little sympathy – especially from the world famous. Hollywood stars seem to be arguing, in some ways, that Polanski's talent should allow him some sort of free pass for his past behaviour. "Hollywood... looks at the Polanski case and says, 'You have to make allowances for genius'," said Gallagher.

Hollywood's elite also functions as a kind of club and Polanski, seen by the elite as a great European auteur director, is a firm member. That requires a certain degree of success but also a great deal of ideological conformity. It is a cliche that Hollywood is uniformly liberal in its politics, but one with more than a dash of truth in it. It is certainly interesting to see the reaction to Polanski's case and compare it with the reaction to Mel Gibson, when he was caught mouthing drunken anti-Semitic abuse.

Gibson, a rare conservative in Hollywood, was brutally condemned by his fellow stars and sent into virtual career exile. Polanski, whose crime is far more serious, has seen a vast outpouring of sympathy. Being a member of the Hollywood club certainly seems to have its privileges.

"The difference between the reaction to Gibson and the reaction to Polanski has been just huge. Huge!" said celebrity interviewer Gayl Murphy. "That says a lot about what Hollywood thinks is important to them."

But, more importantly, it has also exposed a huge fault line between what Hollywood thinks of itself and what Americans think of Hollywood. No longer is it just the right wing of America lambasting "Hollywood liberals" for their permissive and overly Democratic ways. It is Democrats too. And feminists. And conservatives. Polanski seems to have united the different strands of America in a way that few other things have.

As Harding blogged after her column exploded across the blogosphere and she was inundated with emails and requests for press interviews: "Who knew being disgusted with Roman Polanski would turn out to be the ever-elusive common ground between rightwing dudes and liberal feminists?" Link...

Lady Gaga will hit the road solo

Lady Gaga isn't letting her ill-fated tour with Kanye West keep her from her fans.

A day after her joint tour with the rapper was canceled, the pop star said Friday she'll be hitting the road solo.

The West and Lady Gaga tour was supposed to kick off Nov. 10 in Phoenix. Lady Gaga said the two "mutually decided to cancel the tour." She said that West is "going to take some time off, but I'm not."

Gaga made the comments before accepting the Rising Star honor at Billboard's annual Women in Music event in New York, where Beyoncé was honored as woman of the year.

In announcing the cancellation of the Fame Kills tour Thursday, Live Nation offered no explanation. The tour was to have hit Anaheim on Nov. 15 and Los Angeles on Nov. 16. The company said that refunds would be available at the point of purchase and that tickets purchased online or over the phone "will be refunded automatically."

Gaga said her tour will start in mid-November, but there were no immediate details on dates and locations.

The Fame Kills tour had been problematic from the start, especially after West's appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13, where he took the microphone from teenage singer Taylor Swift as she was about to begin an acceptance speech. He subsequently apologized and told Jay Leno the next day he planned to take some time off. Link...

Hollywood embraces Roman Polanski

When filmmaker Roman Polanski was arrested Saturday in Switzerland, he was on his way to accept an award for Lifetime Achievement at the Zurich Film Festival.

Peers of Roman Polanski have praised him for his talent and lamented his arrest.

Peers of Roman Polanski have praised him for his talent and lamented his arrest.

Polanski's friend, Swiss filmmaker Otto Weisser, was among the first to publicly run to his defense.

"This is for me a shock. I am ashamed to be Swiss, that the Swiss is doing such a thing to brilliant fantastic genius, that millions and millions of people love his work," Weisser said upon learning the director had been detained by Swiss authorities. "He's a brilliant guy, and he made a little mistake 32 years ago. What a shame for Switzerland."

By Tuesday, more than 130 heavyweights in the movie industry had taken up Polanski's cause.

An online petition has been signed by directors such as Marin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Pedro Almodovar, as well as actors.

Studio chief Harvey Weinstein told CNN in a statement: "We are calling every filmmaker we can to help fix this terrible situation." Video Watch a report on celebrities' feelings about Polanski's arrest »

Roman Polanski first stormed Hollywood with his psychological thriller, "Rosemary's Baby," in 1968. He remains one of the most celebrated directors in Hollywood and the world, despite not having set foot in the United States in more than three decades.

"We stand by and await his release and his next masterwork," said Zurich Film Festival Jury President Debra Winger on Monday on behalf of Polanski.

Adrien Brody, who Polanski directed in 2002's "The Pianist," had glowing words when it came to his experience working with Polanski.

"If you have the guidance from someone you admire, like Roman Polanski, who not only is a gifted director and actor, but who knows the subject matter and in my opinion the character that I portray, implicitly, then, it's a huge gift," Brody said.

"I learned a great deal about film and the process," the Academy Award winning actor added. "I spent six weeks without another actor on the set, just Roman and I and a crew -- and that's, that's a dream come true for an actor. I cherished those memories."

"He is sweet and very strong and is very, very demanding, in the tradition of an auteur," said Sigourney Weaver about being directed by Polanski in 1994's "Death and the Maiden."

It's a reputation Polanski's earned and maintained, despite his 1977 guilty plea on a statutory rape charge of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. Video Watch the mixed reaction in Switzerland to Polanski's arrest »

The celebrated director fled the United States and settled in France to escape jail, but by the standards of those in Hollywood, the case is ancient history.

"We hope today that this latest order will be dropped," Winger said. "It is based on a three decade old case that is all but dead, except for a minor technicality."

Matthew Belloni, who has has been following the Polanski case for The Hollywood Reporter's legal blog, said the outpouring of support from the film industry is not surprising.

"It is a criminal conviction of a terrible crime, but it is something that the industry is willing to look the other way on," Belloni said. "If Hollywood really gets to look at itself and judge the personal character of a lot of the artists in the community, there would be a lot of empty seats at the Oscars because a lot of people have personal problems. This sort of is at the extreme level of that."

As Polanski's star rose after his Oscar-winning hit, "Rosemary's Baby," the world got to know the director's back story.

He was the son of Polish Jews whose mother died in a concentration camp even as a young Polanski escaped the Nazis.

Polanski grew up to become a famous director and married actress Sharon Tate. He later became the object of national sympathy when Tate was murdered by the Charles Manson Family in 1969.

His next big movie, 1974's "Chinatown," was nominated for 11 Oscars. That success gave Hollywood its heroic tag line for Polanski: Tragic survivor moves on.

Actors from his films said they have felt a certain empathy as they are directed by him.

"Roman was one of those poor Krakow ghetto children who had to hide in the latrine," said Sir Ben Kingsley, who starred with Weaver in "Death and the Maiden."

Brody hailed Polanski for his survival, even in the face of being separated from his parents and losing his mother at Auschwitz.

"He survived alone, basically, in hiding," Brody said. "It's one of the many things I feel he's overcome, and what's wonderful about Roman is that although he's experienced some tragic things in his life, he also has this unbroken spirit."

After the rape case, American authorities sought his arrest, but he continued to work around the world on movies such as "Tess" and "The Ninth Gate," traveling to film festivals and movie sets.

But it was in 2002 when Polanski rocketed back onto the public stage, with "The Pianist."

The Holocaust film won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, igniting a buzz culminating in three Oscars in 2003, including best actor for Brody and best director for Polanski. Harrison Ford accepted the award in his absence. The crowd at the Kodak Theater roared.

The Hollywood Reporter's Belloni explained Hollywood's readiness to forgive. "Look at some of the people who have been involved with scandals," Belloni said. "

"Everyone from Michael Vick, who is now playing football again, to Mel Gibson, who has been involved in a lot of scandals, now he's working again. America is a very, very forgiving culture, and Hollywood itself. If you are a talent, the industry is willing in many ways to look the other way."

And the industry isn't alone in wanting to put the past aside.

Polanski's victim, Samantha Geimer, told CNN's Larry King in 2003 that she wished the story and the case had ended soon after it began three decades ago.

"The publicity was so traumatic and so horrible his punishment was secondary to just getting this whole thing to stop," Geimer said. "It was crazy. I never wanted him to go to jail." Link...

Katie: Peter trying to cut me off from kids

Katie Price claims Peter Andre is trying to cut her off from their children by changing his phone numbers.

The glamour model has accused her estranged husband – who she is currently locked in a bitter divorce with – of breaching childcare agreements by preventing her from speaking to Junior, four, Princess Tiaamii, two and Harvey, seven - Katie’s son from a previous relationship - when they are with Peter.

Katie, 31, is quoted by Britain’s Daily Star newspaper as saying: “We may not talk but we have to get on where the kids are concerned. They come first and he should know that.

“I need to be able to speak to my kids when they are with him. He’s a selfish idiot. He has cut me off from my own kids.”

Peter, 34, is said to be reluctant to give his new numbers to Katie – also known as Jordan – because she kept sending him text messages in a bid to convince him to take her back.

It has even been reported she recently left him a voicemail when she serenaded him with Whitney Houston’s classic track ‘I Will Always Love You’.

A friend of the ‘Behind Closed Doors’ singer said: “Peter told Kate last week that he was planning to change his numbers.

“It is not nice when you are someone in the public eye and you have strangers calling you all the time.

“This is not a move to upset Kate – but the way things have been he’d also rather she didn’t have the numbers either. He feels her texts only set him back.”

Permanent custody arrangements for the couple’s children are set to be cemented in the next two weeks, and their divorce will become final next month. Link...

'Pretty Woman' takes Hindu names for kids: report

NEW DELHI — The children of Hollywood star Julia Roberts have been given Hindu names during shooting for her latest blockbuster in India, which has upset some locals over its use of a temple, reports say.

The star of Pretty Woman arrived in India on September 18 to shoot for her upcoming movie, "Eat, Pray, Love", based on a best-selling book by Elizabeth Gilbert, and is filming 65 kilometres (40 miles) from the capital New Delhi.

The 42-year-old actress has run into controversy, however, with some devotees in the village of Pataudi reportedly upset by her presence after a vast security team of 350 guards sealed off their temple for filming.

"We are not allowed to enter the temple premises. They cannot stop us from worshipping because Julia Roberts is in there," one unnamed resident of Pataudi told The Indian Express newspaper.

The 42-year-old visited a local Hindu saint Swami Dharam Dev of the Hari Mandir Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya ashram on Wednesday who re-named her three children -- though only for their time in India.

"Julia came to seek blessings from me," Swami Dharam Dev was quoted as saying by The Times of India newspaper.

"I have named her twins Hazel and Phinnaeus as Laxmi and Ganesh while Henry will be called Krishn Balram," he said.

She is also learning how to make Indian bread and Dal, a typical dish made with pulses, for a scene in the movie in which she cooks at the ashram, which is a spiritual retreat. Link...

Cops crack down on movie piracy racket

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday claimed to have busted a major Bollywood movie piracy racket allegedly run by a Pakistan-based man. According to the police, the gang has illegally procured prints of at least 11 Bollywood movies, including Whats Your Raashee that is slated for release in theatres on Friday.

Two months ago, the police department had set up a team, which had officers of the police’s Social Service Branch also, to keep a tab on piracy cases and rackets.

“A few days ago, we received a tip-off that the print of Dil Bole Hadippa that was released on September 18 is already available in the market. However, despite making some efforts, we could not nab them,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

On Saturday, the team received a tip-off that a deal would take place for the print of yet-to-be- released Whats Your Raashee on September 20, near Guru Kripa Hotel at Kherwadi Junction. Link...

Travolta tells of trying to save son

LOS ANGELES: John Travolta has described how he fought to save his 16-year-old son's life by performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after the boy suffered a seizure at the family's holiday home in the Bahamas.

The film star, 55, was giving evidence at Nassau Supreme Court in the trial of two men accused of trying to extort $US25 million ($28.6 million) from him.

With his actress wife, Kelly Preston, 46, looking on, Travolta told how they were awakened by a nanny at 10.15am on January 2 after Jett collapsed in a bathroom.

''I ran downstairs with my wife to help my son,'' he said.

In the bathroom he found anassistant doing chest compressions on Jett. Travolta, who has not previously talked publicly about Jett's death, said he assisted with breathing help.

''[Jett] was autistic. He suffered from a seizure disorder,'' Travolta told the jury.

Tarino Lightbourne, an ambulance driver, and Pleasant Bridgewater, a lawyer and former Bahamas senator who allegedly acted as an intermediary, have pleaded not guilty to extortion.

Police say the alleged extortion involved a document related to Jett's treatment. It would have released emergency responders from liability if the family refused an ambulance, but police say that did not happen.

According to his family, Jett suffered from Kawasaki disease, which leads to inflammation of the arteries, and had a history of seizures.

Travolta arrived at court on Wednesday in an entourage of four-wheel-drives for his first appearance at the trial. Security was heavier than previous days, with police surrounding the courthouse. Link...

Roberts film angers villagers?

Julia Roberts has apparently angered Hindu villagers in India after their temple was closed to film scenes for her latest movie during an important religious festival.

The Oscar-winning actress is reportedly being protected by 350 guards, including 40 gunmen, bulletproof cars and a helicopter while she films Eat, Pray, Love at Ashram Hari Mandir, near Delhi.

Villagers hoping to celebrate Navratri, nine days of worship of their Goddess Durga, were angered when they found the temple sealed off by Julia's security team, the Daily Telegraph reports.

One said: "Entry for devotees is barred. We were not allowed to enter and pray in the morning by the security. Only those who could manage to sneak in did so but most of us were all sent back. It's Navratras and we must not be stopped from visiting a temple."

Another threatened: "I am going to barge in for the evening aarti (ritual). Let's see who stops me. What is it that they are shooting that we cannot even enter our own temple."

Julia is staying at Pataudi Palace, the family home of former Indian cricket captain Tiger Pataudi and his Bollywood star son Saif Ali Khan. Link...

Sleeve notes: Sugababes lose their spice

Sugababes

Sugababes ... wear the wrong top and you're out. Photograph: Martin Godwin

It's not every day you get to compare Sugababes to the band who wrote Nazi Punks Fuck Off. But this week the pop trio followed in the footsteps of extreme metal terrorists Napalm Death by soldiering on, despite the fact that, since Keisha Buchanan's departure on Monday, their lineup now has zero original members.

It seems that cracking the lucrative US market – which is less hassle with well-drilled, nicely behaved, personality-free popsters – is more of a priority than making innovative, sassy pop with a bit of heart and soul to it. Popjustice's Peter Robinson blogged for us, opining that the band no longer have the rights to their moniker, and the latest news saw ex-Suga Mutya agreeing, with the cutting Tweet: "Shame on Heidi."

Of course, this cloud comes with a lovely silver lining. You see, if it wasn't for the Sugababes losing their last vital member, I'd have never got to go on Newsround! Oh, and talking of Newsround, here's something really weird – the guy who filmed the interview was an original member of … Napalm Death. Is the world sometimes too trippy or what? Link...

Kanye at the VMA’s

By Chris Davidson

Kanye. Kanye. Kanye. The only sound resounding in my shaking head while I witnessed Mr. West shock America once again. If by some miraculous event, you have not heard about Kanye West’s latest national Blog-worthy episode, please allow me to elaborate while you crawl from under your rock.

Last Sunday, on the Video Music Awards, a humble and very deserving, young Taylor Swift ascends the stage to accept her well-earned award for Best Female Video. This must have been a euphoric moment for Taylor as she delivers her customary acceptance speech; but wait, not when Yeezy’s on the loose. Much to everyone’s surprise, Kanye appears on the stage, seemingly out of nowhere, interrupts Taylor’s “Thank You’s,” states that “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time,” and in that moment he deprives Taylor of her “winning moment.”

Now “Yay” has had many unpredictable moments since the release of his album “College Dropout,” one of his most famous statements that former President George W. Bush “does not care about Black people.” Despite the fact that audiences know Kanye to be arrogant, self-centered, and condescending, no one was prepared for this attack on an innocent Taylor Swift.

Kanye West pleads his sorrow and shows some type of remorse for his actions while being interviewed by Jay Leno; he also claims that he is sorry for the incident. Is this enough, however? Can Kanye do whatever he wants, when he wants, and nullify the negativity of his actions with a simple, “I’m sorry?” Even President Obama feels that Kanye’s actions were unruly and immature. Obama identifies Kanye to be a “Jackass.”
If the leader of the country feels that you are not a constructive member of the public, maybe it’s time to reevaluate your image of Kanye. Link...

Alleged Price rapist 'propositioned model months later'

Katie Price's alleged rapist asked her to perform another sex act just months after he sexually assaulted her.

The glamour model - who claims she was raped by a "famous celebrity" in London's West End several years ago - says that she burst into tears when her attacked approached her at a party and demanded oral sex.

The 31-year-old beauty told a friend: "I was horrified and burst into tears. Now every time I see his face on TV I shudder. It brings back such horrible memories.

A pal added: "He had been leering at her all night. She was disgusted. He just came straight out with it and asked for oral sex. He was obviously a man used to getting his own way."

Price - whose divorce to singer Peter Andre will be finalised in four weeks - has revealed she voluntarily went to bed with her attacker, who turned "very dark" and violent when she did not want to have sex.

The source explained: "She said she had gone to bed with the bloke and then things turned very, very dark. She said: 'No', and that she didn't want to continue.

"She told me: 'He just wouldn't take no for answer'. She didn't want to go to the police because she didn't want to have to go through it all with strangers."

Meanwhile, Price has revealed jealously was the reason Peter decided to leave her earlier this year.

She told Britain's News of the World newspaper: "There's just one word for it - jealousy. Jealousy killed my relationship.

"I know why we divorced, but it's such a stupid thing. I'm not saying I'm an angel. But I know I'm not a bad person."

Katie also admitted she will always love Peter - with whom she raises three children Harvey, seven, Junior, four, and two-year-old Princess Tiaamii - but will never reconcile with him.

She explained: "It was Pete who wanted to end it. I would never, ever have ended our marriage.

Never, ever. I would have always given it a go. He is the father of my children and I will always love him, but I'm out of it now. And I'm not going back." Link...

Dil Bole Hadippa: Clichéd, average fare

When director Anurag Singh set out to make “Dil Bole Hadippa”, he must have stumbled upon a book called ‘The Big Punjabi Book of Bollywood Clichés’ and decided to put in each one in this film.

As if that wasn’t enough, he has taken elements from every successful Yash Raj film and added that to the film. So you have glimpses of “DDLJ”, “Chak De India”, “Bunty Aur Babli”, “Veer Zaara” and “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”.

If that doesn’t sound like hotchpotch, there are ample doses of speeches on women’s rights, India-Pakistan friendship and even the token secular touch. Not an encouraging sign at all.

“Dil Bole Hadippa” stars Rani Mukherjee as Veera Kaur, a feisty Punjabi girl who has a passion for cricket. Her dream is to be part of a local team that plays an annual match with a Pakistani team for the Aman Cup, a tournament started by two friends — one Indian, the other Pakistani.

Unfortunately, the Indian Tigers never win against the Pakistani Champs, causing its Indian owner (Anupam Kher, hamming away to glory) much grief.

In desperation, he asks his cricketer son Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) to come back from London to help salvage the team. Veera decides to try out for the team but is shooed away at the gate by a watchman who says cricket is not for girls.

Desperate for a chance, she comes back as Veer Pratap Singh, complete with turban and moustache. While she tries to impress Rohan with her batting on the field, she bats her eyelashes at him off it and a romance blooms.

“Dil Bole Hadippa” is meant to be a sports film but it tries to pack in so many things it ends up being nothing. The main culprit is the extremely shoddy script and it appears as if all the lead actors had resigned themselves to the fact.

As a result, the performances are at best average. Rani Mukherjee, looking svelte, tries hard but is unable to muster up enthusiasm. Shahid Kapur also does adequately but doesn’t seem convinced about his character.

I cannot think of any part of this film that rises above the average. Go for it if you don’t have anything better to do this weekend. Link...

Megan Fox on being famous and misunderstood

TORONTO – There we were, in a press con with Megan Fox at the Park Hyatt Hotel Toronto, not expecting even a tiny bit of “FC” (our abbreviation for a term we coined, Filipino connection) when the beautiful actress was suddenly talking about “the Philippines.”

Our colleague had asked the star of director Karyn Kusama’s “Jennifer’s Body,” a “Midnight Madness” entry to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), if majority of her fan mail was from the US or from abroad.

Megan, a knockout in a short dress, fishnet stockings and high heels, answered, “I don’t always have the time to go through my own fan mail because I’m traveling and working so much. I know that, for some reason, I’m really famous in the Philippines. I don’t know why. Apparently, there’s a fake Megan Fox Facebook page. I don’t have a Facebook or Twitter account. But, somebody made a fake Facebook page for me. And, it was shutting down the server because it was getting so many hits – and most of them were from the Philippines. I don’t know why it’s happening, but it is.”

Sexiest woman

We didn’t know this. Of course, it was not surprising, since Megan is famous all over the world – not just the Philippines. Still, we felt we had to assure the actress with the smoldering eyes and pouty lips, who is often voted as the world’s sexiest woman. So, what would a Filipino gallantly do? We told her, “I’m from the Philippines, so let me assure you, that is true.”

Our interview took place before the controversy erupted about Megan’s comments which were critical of her “Transformers” director, Michael Bay. Some of Michael’s crew members posted comments defending their boss and labeling Megan “dumb as a rock.” (In our interviews with her, Megan comes across as anything but dumb.)

Michael has issued a letter saying, “I don’t condone the letter to Megan. And, I don’t condone Megan’s outlandish quotes. But, her crazy quips are part of her charm. The fact of the matter is, I still love working with her, and we still get along. I expect more crazy quotes from her on ‘Transformers 3.’”

Megan, who plays a succubus (the term used in the film; it simply means a female demon) in the horror-comedy penned by “Juno” writer, Diablo Cody, is also surprised that young girls mob her during her public appearances.

She shared, “When I’m out or when I go to awards shows, oddly enough, it’s always young girls who show up. It’s teenage girls who want to meet me, shake my hands, have their pictures taken with me and talk. I’m relieved about that. I appreciate having female fans and being different. I’m a different kind of role model for young girls. But, I’m not the kind that America is comfortable with.”

Later, a reporter’s question about her boyfriend, actor Brian Austin Green, suddenly made Megan emotional and in tears. The writer asked if the fact that Brian is older (he is 36; she’s 23) and an actor, as well, allows her to be comfortable around him. The pair has been reported to split a few times, but each time, they reconciled.

“Sure, I think those elements come into play,” Megan began her answer about Brian’s qualities. “It’s hard to be in a relationship with someone who’s not in this industry, because it’s impossible to understand the things that we do for our job. They’re not normal. Anyone else whose wife went off to work and was making out with Johnny Depp for a film would be like, ‘What? I’m not comfortable with you doing that!’ It’s strange. You work long hours. You go out of town for weeks or months at a time. So, yeah, having someone who’s also in the industry is helpful…”

Emotional

Then, Megan began crying and talked haltingly: “But, other than that…as a person…Brian is a good person. Man, I just got emotional.”

After tissue paper was handed to her, and she collected herself, she said of Brian, “You don’t come across a lot of genuine people in this industry. And, I feel blessed to have found someone who is genuine and who will stick around through all my bulls**t.”

Earlier, the actress talked about her relationship with Brian this way: “Since I was 18, I’ve been in a monogamous relationship with the same person. Of course, we have ups and downs. Because I’m so much younger, I’m very aware of the fact that I don’t want to be a bad partner. I don’t want to be selfish – I want to be a good girlfriend.”

She added, “I’ve taken some breaks to collect and restore myself, get my head back on straight so that I can be good to and for him. I can be a positive person in his life. I don’t ever want to be a negative energy for him or with him.”

Also earlier, we asked Megan if she enjoyed doing “Jennifer’s Body” since the film supposedly makes fun of some people’s mistaken notion of her. “Sure,” she replied. “There’s a misconception that I’m overly confident or a little vapid – that I am like Jennifer in the sense that I’m a bratty, spoiled girl who doesn’t have much to bring to the table. It was fun to be able to play this character. Jennifer is not dumb. She’s quite smart, manipulative and irreverent. I really appreciated that, and I appreciate being able to say the things that she says with such conviction.”

On published quotes from her, like this one that Esquire magazine bannered, “I’m just really confident sexually, and I think that sort of oozes out of my pores…,” Megan explained, “When they write these articles on me, they don’t allow me to be self-deprecating. Sometimes, I say things that are obviously sarcastic, and they interpret them quite literally. That quote was one of those things where I was rolling my eyes and like, ‘It just oozes out of my pores.’ The article was about how sexy I was supposed to be. The journalist was honest with me that it was his assignment. So, we were sort of mocking it. That was me mocking myself.

“I do feel like I’m confident sexually with my partner in the privacy of our relationship. Though that’s very different from being confident when you step out on stage or into the world, to be judged by everyone. Brian and I have a bond. We trust each other. I’m allowed to be free, comfortable and confident within that.”

Asked about a reported comment from Diablo Cody that Megan says things that she should keep to herself, the actress remarked, “I think that’s true. I have a tendency to sit with a journalist and want to be entertaining to build an instant relationship. I sometimes forget or remain unaware of how things translate, once they’re in print. So, that’s a learning process for me.”

Kissing scene

In “Jennifer’s Body,” Megan gets to lock lips with her costar, Amanda Seyfried. “The kissing scene was awkward,” she confessed. “All kissing scenes are awkward, no matter how you go about it. Amanda, very clearly, didn’t want to do it. She was nervous. We both were. That helped us bond through it. It helped that we had a female director who was very understanding of our awkwardness. Going to work and being paid to kiss someone on the mouth is a strange thing. For me, it never gets easier or more comfortable. But, I will say that I felt safest with Amanda than with strange boys you don’t know. That’s especially uncomfortable (laughing)!”

As a possessed cheerleader who becomes a killer, Megan eats boys…literally. “I do lick the blood a lot,” she quipped. “It’s corn syrup. They have different flavors – mine was bubble gum flavored. In the scene where I’m scooping the blood out of a cadaver, that body was an exact mold of Kyle Gallner’s body. It was torn open with the insides showing. They filled the body replica with corn syrup. We did the scene three times. I was very nauseous. Some of the producers who were there – grown men – were getting sick and had to walk away from the monitor because it was disgusting (laughing).” Link...

Another twist in Meera’s tale

LAHORE: In yet another twist in the unfolding tale of film star Meera’s marriage, Family Court judge Shazia Khalid imposed a Rs 3,000 fine on Meera after the actress’s counsel withdrew a petition, seeking the dissolution of her purported marriage with Attiqur Rehman.

Separately, an additional district and sessions judge on Thursday extended the interim bail of the actress and her family members until September 26.

On September 6, the court had granted interim bail to Meera, her mother Shafqat Zohra, father Syed Muhammad Sarwar, brother Ahsan Abbas and brother-in-law Mushtaq Ahmad, in a case registered against them on the charge of theft and threatening her purported husband Attiqur Rehman of dire consequences. The complainant, under an order passed by the court of additional sessions judge, had got a case registered against them, alleging they took away valuables worth thousands of rupees from his house and also hurled life threats at him. The accused, later, secured pre-arrest bail in the case. Attiq’s counsel sought more time from the court for discussion, but Meera’s counsel objected to it, saying it was unnecessary wastage of time. However, the court gave Attiq’s counsel and the investigation officer a last chance to get ready on the next hearing for presenting their arguments. Talking to reporters after appearing before the court, Meera said she was being bothered illegally.

Asma Jahangir: Meanwhile, a private TV channel reported that renowned lawyer and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Chairwoman Asma Jahangir would represent Meera in court. staff report/daily times monitor. Link...
