Player Ratings: Zurich 2-5 Real Madrid

Johnny Leoni - 3: Must take the blame on Ronaldo's two goals and almost gifted the Portuguese international a third. A nightmare performance for the shot stopper.

Florian Stahel - 4: Things did not exactly go as planned for Stahel, as Ronaldo, Kaka and Drenthe caused him all kinds of problems. Was booked in the first half after a reckless challenge. He did improve after the break.

Hannu Tihinen - 4: Responsible for the free kick that led to the opening goal of the match and beaten way too easily by Higuain for Real's third. Not the type of performance that his coach was hoping for.

Alain Rochat - 6: Largely kept Higuain at bay, but should have been more alert when the Argentine set up Raul's goal on 33 minutes. Nothing to be ashamed of though.

Philippe Koch - 6.5: Koch was the best of a shaky back-line. Not troubled too much defensively due to the lack of attacking intentions from Arbeloa and even went forward a number of times after the break. Denied at the hour mark by Casillas after a shot from 15 yards.

Silvan Aegerter - 6: Too sloppy in possession, but helped Zurich back into the game with a powerful header halfway the second half.

Onyekachi Okonkwo - 5.5: Did not look confident on the ball and failed to create any significant chances. Was never a real match for Xabi Alonso and Lass.

Johann Vonlanthen - 7.5: Vonlanthen was without a doubt Zurich's best man on the evening. Involved in both goals and always looked lively on the ball. Good performance from the former PSV forward.

Xavier Margairaz - 6: Converted his spot kick in great fashion, but was simply unable to leave his mark on the game throughout the match.

Alexandre Alphonse - 6: Went down way too easy inside the area after going by Casillas to earn a spot kick. Not a vintage performance by any means.

Eric Hassli - 5: Largely anonymous, and was understandably replaced at half-time.

Substitutes

Dusan Djuric- 6: Did not make a huge difference after coming on, but looked more inspired than Hassli and was an improvement.

Wissem Abdi - 5 : Replaced the injured Okonkwo, but was unable to make an impact in the 20 minutes he played.

Milan Gajic - N/A

REAL MADRID

Iker Casillas - 6: Did not have too much to do, but was still beaten twice. Won't be too happy with the referee's decision to book him and award Zurich a spot kick.

Alvaro Arbeloa - 6: Was one of Real's worst players on the pitch. Not really troubled at the back, but was hardly involved going forward. Could have done more to help his forwards.

Raul Albiol - 7: Fairly composed performance, although his marking did stray from time to time.

Pepe - 6.5: Was decent in defense, but was not really tested upon due to Zurich's weak attack.

Royston Drenthe - 7.5: As usual, was a menace attacking down the left flank. Additionally, Drenthe was solid in his defensive duties as well, despite facing Zurich's star player.

Xabi Alonso - 7: A hugely influential performance, stopping the play and distributing the ball easily. Zurich got back in the game after he left the pitch due to injury.

Lass - 6: The Frenchman was not in his best form in Switzerland and was deservedly booked after the break. Lass will not be satisfied with his performance.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 7.5: An impressive performance before the break, but Ronaldo faded away in the second half. Fired home two free kicks, but will have every reason to thank Leoni for that.

Kaka - 7: The playmaker was, like Ronaldo, a serious threat for the Zurich defense before the break. He was less impressive after the break, but still set up Guti for the 5-2 with a great pass.

Gonzalo Higuain - 7: Higuain was invisible for large parts of the game, but played a crucial role is his side's win. Set up Raul for Madrid's second and scored himself in the dying seconds of the first half.

Raul - 6,5: Not his best game, but was full of running and knew when to hold the ball up. Will be happy with yet another Champions League goal after 33 minutes of play.

Substitutes

Guti - 7: Cut a frustrated figure until the final seconds, when he executed a typically cool finish.

Gago - 6: Not the impact on the game he was hoping for, as the game slipped away for Real after his entrance. Almost added his name to the score sheet with a placed shot. Link...
