Money could not save boy’s life, police kill abductors

LAHORE: Two of the three men who kidnapped and later killed 11-year-old Umair Irfan despite receiving Rs 1.5 million as ransom, were killed in an ‘encounter’ with the police late on Tuesday, a private TV channel reported.

The two killed abductors were identified as Rehan and Suhail, while the police shifted their accomplice to an undisclosed location after capturing him alive, the channel reported. The channel said the abductors had worked as servants for the boy’s family.

Umair, a student of class 7, was kidnapped from the Shadbagh Police precincts a couple of days ago. The kidnappers had demanded Rs 1.5 million from Umair’s parents and threatened to kill him if they were not paid the ransom. The boy’s parents approached the police who asked them to continue negotiating with the kidnappers while they made efforts to trace the criminals.

Umair’s parents paid the ransom to the abductors but they did not free their son. On Monday, Umair’s parents were informed that Sahiwal Police had buried an 11-year-old boy whose body was found from a deep freezer dumped on a roadside in Arifwala, near Sahiwal.

Umair’s father went to Sahiwal and identified his son after exhuming the body. He brought the body to his residence with the help of Shadbagh Police. A large number of residents gathered at the boy’s home after the news spread, and demanded justice from the police. On Tuesday evening, Shadbagh Police killed two of the three suspected kidnappers in an alleged encounter in Tajbagh, and also recovered the ransom money.
